Module overview

What is the Tanks module?

The ADR Tanks module adds the technical and operational knowledge required for dangerous goods carried in tanks and tank containers. Drivers study tank definitions, construction materials, compartments, baffles, approvals, inspections, certification and data plates, then connect those features to the substance’s physical state, pressure and temperature. The emphasis is practical: understanding what the equipment is designed to do and recognising when a tank, vehicle or document is not ready for the journey.

A large part of the module concerns loading and unloading. That includes maximum and minimum filling ratios, ullage, maximum allowable working pressure, open and closed filling, top and bottom systems, gravity, pumps, compressors, pressure, vacuum and tipping tanks. It also covers static electricity, cleaning and purging, tunnel routes, BLEVE awareness and the way liquid movement affects braking, acceleration, cornering and rollover risk.

Qualification context

How this module fits an ADR route

Tanks is a method-of-carriage module. A general tank route combines it with Core and the relevant individual class modules or grouped class selections. A driver taking both methods of carriage may study Packages and Tanks together while reusing the same canonical class knowledge.

Official training also expects employers to cover the technical operation of the specific tanker and equipment the driver will use. Generic revision cannot replace that vehicle- and product-specific instruction.
