What is the Class 8: Corrosive Substances module?

ADR Class 8 covers corrosive substances capable of damaging living tissue, other goods, packages or vehicle materials through chemical action. The effect may be immediate or delayed and can change with concentration, contact time and temperature. A release is therefore not only a personal-exposure problem: it can weaken containers, attack load restraint or vehicle components and cause a larger loss of containment.

The module develops recognition of labels and subsidiary hazards, including toxicity, flammability and oxidation. It also focuses on incompatibility. Some corrosives react strongly with other chemicals, metals, heat, water or neutralising agents, so an improvised attempt to dilute or neutralise a spill can intensify the incident. Segregation, suitable containment, PPE, decontamination and early specialist advice are the safer revision themes.
