What is the Class 6: Toxic & Infectious Substances module?

ADR Class 6 separates toxic substances in Division 6.1 from infectious substances in Division 6.2. A driver needs to recognise both the label and the exposure route because harm may follow inhalation, ingestion, skin absorption, injection or contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Toxic effects may be acute or develop over time, while some loads also present flammable, oxidising or corrosive subsidiary hazards.

For infectious substances, the module covers Category A and Category B assignments, clinical and research waste, used sharps and special packaging. Across both divisions, the main controls are containment, segregation—particularly from foodstuffs—careful handling, suitable PPE and rapid specialist advice after exposure. Putting on and removing PPE without spreading contamination is as important as selecting it.
